Today, when my friends were at school and Adam was taking his afternoon nap, I snuck out of my house and took the bus to the local music store. I bought $ 39.76 of Bach sheet music, for violin and adapted for the piano, and spent the rest of my money on some lofty flute songs and a book of songs from musicals. I thanked the old woman at the shop, and was about to leave, when I saw the crowd of people in the parking lot.
Adam's black Ferrari was parked outside, and the devil himself was climbing slowly out of the front seat.
Oh crap. I thought, but I'm pretty sure the word that did cross my mind was not 'crap.'
"Are they shooting a movie or something?" Someone asked.
"Isn't he handsome?" Some older women pointed at Adam.
"Is that even a real Ferrari?" A teenage boy asked.
Adam ignored them, caught sight of me, and waved. "Little Ethan." He called. "I came to pick you up."
Now, there is nothing more humiliating than riding in a convertible with the top down with a hot guy. Everyone points, tries to race, and/or gapes. They all think "That's his girlfriend?" and then they judge you. What was even worse was the fact that Adam didn't do anything to stop the girls from ooggling at him. He even encouraged it, by tossing his golden hair when it got in the way of his blue eyes. He winked, beamed, and even gave that sexy one-eyebrow-raised look to the girls we passed. And since school was just getting out, there were plenty of girls he could charm.
Finally, we arrived at my house, where I locked the doors and windows so Adam couldn't get in. Butterfly later picked the lock on my front door, and the Four Lords moved in, all except Damian, who had found several girls that he was staying the night with. Nobody questioned him further.
While plunking through some of my new music, I was continually interrupted by either Alex, though I was sure he meant well, and Adam, whose smug look thorough enjoyment told me that it wasn't just pure chance that made him bump the piano bench or casually put a hand on the keys. After fifteen minutes of this, I locked myself in my ravaged room and called Xoi, and we talked about laptops and Xoi's boy problems, which paled in comparison to mine.
"I really wish there were more guys at my school." She said. "They're pretty easy to hang out with, and they aren't mean like girls are."
I had to agree. "But I'm sure there are some mean guys out there." I replied, thinking of Adam. "Hey, Xoi!" I said as an idea popped into my head.
"What?"
"Would you do something for me? You can meet lots of guys." And I told her my plan.
