"I'll keep you my dirty little secret, dirty little secret. Don't tell anyone or you'll be--" I hit the reply button on my cell phone and cut it off mid-song. I felt this new ring tone was very appropriate. It was three in the morning.
Neil groaned from his bed. "Damn it, Ethan. That was a good dream." He murmured before falling back to sleep.
"Hello?" I whispered groggily into the receiver.
"Dude, you owe me." Xoi's voice said from the other end.
"What?"
"I told Caroline that we were dating."
"I'm sorry, but I don't swing that way." I said, still totally out of it because of the time.
"Dude, did you forget? You're in disguise. Caroline is in love with you. You're living with one of the hottest guys I know."
"Let me go back to sleep." I begged her.
"No. You owe me big. Thanks to you, I now have no chance with any of the guys at this new school because I have a 'boyfriend.'"
"Don't you have like six guys falling for you back home?" I said, starting to wake up now. "And, anyway, there are no guys at your school. It's all girls, remember."
Bringing up the guys at home was a sure way to tick her off, or make her depressed. It depended on the day, time, and what she had eaten for the previous meal. I braced myself.
"Forget about all of them." I could just picture Xoi waving her hand to dismiss them. "I like somebody else."
"Who?"
"Nobody."
I gave a dramatic, but quiet, sigh. "I'm going back to sleep. When you want to tell me, tell me, OK?"
"Saturday night, we can hang out. OK? We can play 'would you rather'."
"Sure." I replied. "I'm going back to sleep."
I hung up my phone and sunk back into my pillows. I was just about to fall back into unconsciousness when Neil said, in his sleep, "No, Ray, you're not a gorilla." And that made me laugh so hard that I had to leave the room for fear of waking him.
