In room 222, Butterfly was chopping wood. He wore no shirt, revealing abs that rivaled even Neil's, and his fair hair was damp with perspiration. Chunks of wood flew from his ax and skidded across the tile floor. One landed near my foot.
"Butterfly." I said, going over to him. "Why are you chopping wood?"
He wiped his forehead and shrugged.
"I don't understand it either." Alex said in a whisper. "But, you know, insanity does run in his family."
"His family?"
"Yeah. Ever heard of the Blakes? They're really rich, but...um...not the sanest."
"Blake?" I asked. "Like Neil?"
"Yeah. Didn't you know Neil and Butterfly are cousins?"
"No, I didn't." I looked at Butterfly in a whole new light now. Neil's cousin. They didn't look very similar (Neil with dark hair and blue eyes, Butterfly with silver blond hair and emotionless grey eyes), but I thought of my cousins and realized we didn't look a thing like each other either.
"Weird." I told Alex softly.
"You should meet the rest of their families."
Was madness really hereditary? I have to look it up, but for now and for some reason, Butterfly was chopping wood.
